Crescent Head NSW

25th May 2021

WHO: The Hardys-Chris, Alana, Pippa, and Quinn
VAN: Jayco Journey Outback 22.68-1
LOCATION: Waves Campground – Point Plomer Road Crescent Head

Waves Campground is a little slice of heaven found about 20 minutes south of the heart of Crescent Head. You won’t find any concrete, communal swimming pools, parks, or jumping pillows here – exactly what we were after. To truly tune out and switch off from the hustle.

Upon arrival, you’ll find reception to your right. You’ll more than likely meet the owners Kit and Anna (amazing humans) who will go above and beyond, walk you to your site, show you around and make sure your power is working. We were also lucky enough to meet the resident pet snake when checking in!

The campgrounds are abundant with trees. Just enough for privacy and enough to let an amazing amount of warm winter sun through.

There’s no water connection at Waves campground, but with our 2 x 80 litre water tanks filled up at the servo junction outside of town and the purchase of a slab of water, we were absolutely fine. Our family of four showered every night and washed the dishes each day without issue. In fact, we had water leftover in our tanks!

Even if water was an issue, the hot communal showers and kitchen were next door to us along with a rainwater tap. If you’re looking for a quick rinse off (camping in your car or tent or a quick wash off from the beach) there are also these gorgeous bamboo showers throughout the park to help.

The park has an incredible cafe – Surf Fuel Cafe. The coffee is to die for and so are their smoothies. You won’t find matching crockery (which we joked about!), but you’ll find a sustainable bunch of people caring about recycling, the planet, and providing quality service. Our last morning there, we enjoyed a bacon and egg roll with a coffee amongst the trees while watching their aviary of birds. Needless to say, I grabbed a few coffees from here over the course of the weekend.

What also amazed us over the weekend was our kids. We had no wifi and no reception. That meant no iPad, phones, or tv along with no jumping pillow and no park…. and they didn’t ask for any of these things once. They were too busy climbing trees, making mud pies, surfing, swimming at the beach, playing hide and seek, and riding their bikes.

Our highlights:

Pippa and Quinn: When we took them to the beach at night to watch shooting stars and 4WDing down Point Plomer Road.

Chris: Catching a wave with no crowds and getting in a spearfish.

Alana: Enjoying a good book in the sun, bike rides with the kids, starry nights, and beating Chris in Monopoly Deal (finally).

If you do manage a weekend away there, we highly suggest the following:

– Site 20 – big site, close to everything, amazing aspect.
– If you are travelling further south along Point Plomer Road, ensure your car is suitable to do so. There are some hectic potholes there.
– Sort out your water, but if you can’t there’s no stress, the showers are so clean and so is the camp kitchen.
– Crescent Head Tavern is a nice drive into town for a pub lunch
– Allow yourself to switch off. Your experience will greaten 10 fold once you do.
