Caravan: 2002 Heritage
Where: Myall River Camp
Myall River Camp is a family-owned free camp just outside of Hawks Nest. It is a massive open grassed area with allocated unpowered sites sitting right on the river. Comprising of a boat ramp, fire pits and wood, drinking water, dump point, and compost toilets.. or thankfully our Jayco Heritage has its own shower and toilet.
The camp does home a few dingoes, who showed their faces a few too many times looking for food and put on a howling show at 3 am.
We arrived on Friday in the early afternoon and after the quickest setup we have done yet, it was straight into stoking the fire with a beer for John and some father/son bonding. It’s never too early to start the fire for this pair.
The sandy beach area on the edge of the river provided the best seat in the house for a sunset viewing by the parents and a go on the rope swing for the kids. Sunsets in winter are just so much more spectacular. Then it was back to camp for a quick dinner and dessert of marshmallow on the fire. I think 3 bags of marshmallows were consumed over the weekend. Definitely a highlight for the kids, closely followed by dancing with the party pack of glow sticks to burn off the sugar and chasing bubbles. Must have items for any trip away.
Korbins only request for this holiday was to go fishing. It’s the first thing he asked for when he woke up on Saturday morning so after a morning driving on the beach and seeing a pod of dolphins, spotting an eagle, riding the sand dunes on the body board, a quick swim, and a bite to eat at the benchmark café in Hawks Nest, we got bait from the local shop and went for a fish back at camp . Although we lost more bait from casting then from fish biting, Korbin was a happy boy to be able to fish. The kids all got a go in the kayak as we got to sit around the water for another sunset. It was our friend’s birthday and they treated us all to beef and gravy rolls then we settled in for another night of fire, marshmallows, and glow sticks. If this doesn’t scream relax holiday mood!
Sunday morning was bacon and egg rolls and the sounds of the whistling kettle boiling on the gas cooker, my favourite sound, and the sounds of nature.
It is our first camp in fire season and a great campground to kick it off at.
