WHERE: Far North Queensland-Big 4 Glengarry Holiday Park, Port Douglas
A 5-night stay turned into 11 weeks in Port Douglas for us, and even after all this time, we couldn’t fault the Big 4 Glengarry Holiday Park.
This park provided a relaxing and quiet base, just outside of Port Douglas itself (about a 10-15 min drive) for us to explore Far North Queensland and have a break in the seaside village, without being overrun by the hustle of winter sunseekers from down south.
Even when the park was at full capacity, the lush green sites still maintained privacy with the aid of lots of garden hedging and beautiful palm trees between each site.
Being a Big 4 it is equipped with all the expected child-friendly activities such as pedal carts, jumping pillow, and a landscaped pool and splash park.
Although we found children to be in the minority compared to all the grey nomads during our stay!
During the winter peak season months, they also have weekly BBQ nights, pizza nights (BYO pizza and they will cook it in the onsite woodfire pizza oven), and live musician performances. Cost: $60 per night 2A/ 2C Power & water with Big 4 members discount (May shoulder period)
A few of our highlights around Port Douglas;
Saturdays and Sundays are market days – we stocked up on all our great value, seasonal fresh produce at Mossman Markets and browsed for hand-crafted goods and locally produced food all made by the local stall holders at the iconic Port Douglas Markets
One of Port Douglas’ biggest attractions is Four Mile Beach which is popular with locals and tourists to swim, walk, bike ride along, or even take a segway tour or learn to kite surf if you’re feeling adventurous!
For great views of this beach, we took the Flagstaff Hill coastal walk starting at Four Mile and ending at the palm tree studded Rex Smeal park and nearby landmarks of the Sugar Wharf and St Marys by the Sea Church.
Of course, there is the star of the show, the Great Barrier Reef where you can snorkel at Low Isles, dive the Outer Reef, or have a relaxing sail at sunset
A bit further afield we visited the Daintree Rainforest, Atherton Tablelands, and Cape Tribulation which can all be done in day trips from the park.
