Weipa is a coastal mining town in Queensland. Located on the west coast, it is the largest town on the Cape York Peninsula. There are enormous bauxite deposits along the coast & the port of Weipa is mainly involved in exports of bauxite. If you didn’t know this before travelling to Weipa, it won’t take long to work that out!
After driving on corrugations for what feels like a lifetime, you arrive at a set of traffic lights. I clearly remember my first thought being we were part of some kind of stitch up, we stopped and waited at the lights behind another car. Suddenly we spotted a massive mining truck heading through the intersection once the boom gates lift you cross the mining road to enter the town.
We stayed at Weipa Camping Ground which is situated on the waterfront and with stunning sunsets in Weipa, it makes it the perfect place to watch the sun go down. The Weipa camping ground also has a pool to cool off in providing a much safer option than swimming in the ocean with all the marine life.
Onsite, there are many accommodation options available including a five bedroom lodge with sea and sunset views, budget accommodation and self-contained units, 13 acres of grassed shady camping, and 115 powered sites – 52 unpowered sites. We chose to camp while staying at Weipa Camp Ground & were even lucky enough to get a beautiful shady waterfront site.
At the Weipa campground, there is a takeaway restaurant called ‘Barramunchies’ which is a perfect place to grab some fish & chips, dust off the picnic rug & watch the sunset.
Things you shouldn’t miss out on while in Weipa
We made a booking on Western Cape Eco Tours for the Sunset Cruise and what an absolutely amazing afternoon that was.
Western Cape Eco Tours is a small family-owned company.
While on our tour we got chatting with the owner who told us all about his small family & how they fell in love with Weipa while travelling and decided to make it their home.
Their mission “is to operate a business that reveals the splendour and wonders of this very special place we call home”.
Mission accomplished Guys!
Daily Tour -$45 per head,$25 (2-12yo)
Sunset Tour -$60 per head, $30 (2-12yo)
The price included Cold Drink & Canapés & a whole lot of great info on the marine and bird life living on the western side of the Cape York Peninsula.
Hot Tip
While you’re in Weipa, it’s a great opportunity to stock up on essentials at Woolworths. Within the same shopping centre is a great Butcher that will cryovac your meat for you if you wish to help keep it for a little longer while you travel if you don’t have access to a freezer. The shopping centre is a short walk from Weipa Camping Ground, which also has a post office.
